Visualize the hot, sunny days and white, sandy beaches. Getting away from cold, dreary, snowy winters, what could be more motivating to get a cruise job? When summer is a distant memory for the northern hemisphere as the leaves change colours, we know what is around the corner. Before the snow flies, will there be any way to secure a position on board?

Over the holiday seasons there are extra jobs onboard throughout the holiday according to the myth. This is wrong. It is not just the holiday periods, throughout the year most cruise ships cruise at full capacity. Because of the number of kids oboard all family cruise lines hire tons of youth staff - so this is an exception to this. This equates to a fantastic chance to get your foot in the door for this type of cruise job for a possible full time year round position when one comes available. A number of other vacancies to bear in mind are related to the launching of new cruise ships. For example, it needed around over 1600 crewmembers when Royal Caribbean launched the Allure of the Seas. For 2011, new ships will require a further 7,000 cruise jobs. For those just beginning their search, always bear in mind that there are ALWAYS positions available same goes for those that have been seeking a job on a ship for some time now.

Is it possible to be over qualified for cruise ship employment? In order to just get the job, should you tone down your experience? When they read your experience-packed resume, what are employers thinking about? Recently, this person explained, "I have been applying for various jobs for nearly a year now without landing an interview." And we were asked this question, "Is it possible that I am over qualified and they (the cruise lines) simply skip me over?"

To start with there are a couple of questions cruise applicants should first ask themselves before getting discouraged. On your application, have you been regularly following up? Are you sending your resume to particular hiring managers? It's time to relook at your resume and cover letter again if the answer is yes. It may concern a potential employer if their work experience and education goes beyond what are required, so job seekers need to understand this. Being over qualified is the same as age discrimination because it may be interpreted that you do not fit in with the current position. It takes perseverance landing your dream job more than a perfect resume and cover letter. Once you apply, keep following up…these are the candidates that get the job!! Now's the time, before the snow flies.
