During the latest Cruise Tourism Report launch that took place on the luxurious cruise ship, MSC Sinfonia in Durban Harbor, the South African Tourism Minister stressed the emphasis on South Africa being more involved in the cruise industry.

"When I arrived, I expected a state-of-the-art terminal. We have lots of work to do. All levels of government have to pull together to make sure that we have the investment capital needed."
The tourism MEC for KwaZulu-Natal, also spoke at the launch about the benefits of enhancing the cruise line industry in the country.
"One of the major coups we have pulled off is to engage the promoters of Sea Trade to run a Sea Trade Africa workshop in this area. We have developed a strategy and an action plan to develop the cruise tourism potential of our province and the rest of the East Coast of Africa," he said.
The workshop will discuss all aspects of cruises including shore excursions, and passenger market demands. He stated that, "The conference will hear from cruise line experts on what they want to see from Africa as a destination in terms of terminal operations, infrastructure and hospitality."
"Today's launch of the cruise tourism report therefore signals a clear commitment from the government to ensure that cruise tourism becomes one of the key pillars of the tourism industry," said Mabuyakhulu.
The growth of the cruise industry and tourism as a specialist market would help to further raise South Africa's reputation as a world-class destination, the cruise line industry has developed rapidly worldwide according to the Tourism Minister. He said, "The global cruise tourism industry has experienced significant growth over the last three decades, expanding from 1.4 million passengers in 1980 to where it is today."
